What is a Double Mat Board?

A double mat board combines two matboard layers, both with window openings. The bottom layer is cut slightly wider, leaving a visible inner border (around 5mm) to create contrast or dimension. It’s a popular technique for professional photographers, artists, and framers who want to highlight a feature within the image or simply elevate the overall presentation.

How to Order Your Cut-to-Size Double Mat Board

• Step 1 – Choose your colour combination.
• Step 2 – Select your outer size from our fixed range of standard frame sizes.
• Step 3 – Enter your image or photo dimensions for a custom window cut.

Ordering Notes:

• Window openings are cut slightly smaller than your specified size (by approx. 3–5mm) to allow for artwork overlap
• Window will be centred by default and follow the orientation (portrait or landscape) of your selected outer size, unless noted otherwise in the order notes
• We cannot offer custom outer sizes or multi-window openings
• All sizes in cm are approximate conversions from inches
• Made to order – please allow approx. 1 week for production
• Colour appearance may vary slightly due to screen differences

Specifications of Our Double Matboards:

Each matboard layer is made from premium, acid-free pulp, buffered with calcium carbonate for longevity. Thickness is approx. 1.4mm (4-ply) per layer. The window is cut at a 45° bevel with a white core for a crisp, clean edge.

All orders are cut using our state-of-the-art Swiss-made computerised mat cutter and packaged in clear, protective resealable cello bags for safe handling.
